Jim joined Massey as a professor at the School of Management in 2008. His broad interest in the management of people at work means that he has researched and published a portfolio of areas related to human resource management and industrial relations. Key areas of expertise include employee engagement, variable pay, and flexible working time. The academic quality of this work was recognised by the award of the highest ranking (A) in the most recent NZ research assessment exercise. Its applied focus also saw Jim appointed a Fellow of the New Zealand Human Resource Institute and commissioned to act as a consultant for the International Labour Organization. This has involved advising Pacific Island governments on issues such as the regulation of child labour, seasonal work and employment law. Jim is also co-director of Mpower (the Massey People, Organisations, Work and Employment Research group), which aims to build better connections between the academic, policy and practitioner communities to deliver robust and relevant employment-related research. Jim is on the editorial boards of four leading academic journals and is co-editor and chief of Labour and Industry: A Journal of the Social and Economic Relations of Work.
