The Matsumae International Foundation (MIF) was founded in 1979 to promote global peace and academic collaboration through scientific and cultural exchanges. This program enables outstanding researchers to enhance their expertise while fostering strong international ties with Japan.
Matsumae International Foundation Research Fellowship 2026, Japan (Fully Funded) is available to undertake Fellowship level programs at Japan Universities.
- Duration: Six months, between June 2026 and March 2027.
- Number of Fellowships: Approximately 15 recipients.
- Applicants must specify their desired research period (e.g., September 2026 to February 2027).

Selected fellows will receive:
- Monthly stipend of JPY 220,000 for research and living expenses.
- Arrival fund of JPY 120,000 for initial settlement costs.
- Round-trip airfare (economy-class ticket) from the recipient’s home country to Japan.
- Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical expenses and death benefits.
- A cultural and technological study tour in Japan to enhance research engagement.
This scholarship is open to students of all nationalities except Japanese.
Applicants must:
- Be of non-Japanese nationality.
- Hold a Ph.D. (Doctoral Degree) at the time of application.
- Be 45 years old or younger (born in or after 1980).
- Demonstrate proficiency in English or Japanese.
- Secure acceptance from a host institution in Japan before applying.
- Not have previous long-term experience in Japan (except for short stays for conferences or tourism).
- Be employed in their home country and committed to returning after the fellowship to contribute to national development.
