Program Overview

The Max Planck Institute Fellowship Program provides financial support to international and domestic scholars who wish to conduct research at the Institute in Freiburg but cannot fund their visit independently. Fellowships are available for a two to four-month stay and are designed to support scientific exchange and foster collaborative research within the MPI’s departments.

Degree Level

Max Planck Institute Germany Fellowship 2026 (Fully Funded) is available to undertake Fellowship level programs at Max Planck Institute.

Fellowship Duration
  1. Scholarships are awarded for two to four months
  2. Maximum duration for doctoral scholarships is six months (as per Max Planck Society regulations)

Funding Details

The fellowship includes a monthly stipend to support living costs during your research stay:

  1. Up to €1,365/month for Doctoral students
  2. Up to €2,500/month for Postdocs
  3. Up to €3,000/month for Professors and senior researchers
  4. In exceptional cases, higher amounts may be granted.
  5. Travel costs are not reimbursed.
  6. All fellows are required to arrange and show proof of health insurance for the duration of their stay.


Eligible Nationalities

This fellowship is open to international students of all nationalities.

Eligibility Criteria

The program is open to the following applicants:

  1. Doctoral students from foreign institutions, or from German institutions if they are not supervised by MPI directors
  2. Postdoctoral researchers from international research institutions
  3. Professors and senior researchers from international universities and research centers

Applicants are expected to actively participate in the academic life of the Institute during their stay.

Application Procedure
Required Documents

To apply for the fellowship, candidates must submit the following:

  1. Curriculum Vitae (CV)
  2. List of publications
  3. 1–3 academic publications (PDF format; not required for doctoral students)
  4. Research proposal (5–10 pages; doctoral students should submit a more detailed plan of approx. 10 pages)
  5. Degree certificates (Diploma/Master’s for doctoral students; PhD for postdocs and senior applicants)
Application Deadline

All applications for the 2026 fellowship year must be submitted by:

  1. 31 October 2025

Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.
